The organization of the chapters and subheadings is logical and makes sense. This book is easy to break up into small sections of readings for students. The contemporary art could easily be updated to keep this as a current and relevant text especially since links are used.

While it can be incorporated into visual art, design is understood primarily for its associations as a product of science and art. Design also employs methodical approaches to resolve issues in design and communicate information or set up objects and structures in an effective and often functional way. Artworks such as sculptures include a level of design and planning, however, designs are not as flexible in being received as products of fine art. It is also recommended that you explore the fundamentals of art and design, which will help you connect the dots with ease the next time you analyze a design or artwork. Urban design is most often employed in architecture and refers to the design of spaces, buildings, landscapes, and procedures that will enable future success in the development of the space by other people.
Emphasis
I imagine it has to do with copywright issues, but I think our student body would skip clicking on the links. The learning outcomes, key concepts, test yourself, and key terms sections provide a nice loop for students to reinforce material learned, and to give quick but accurate definitions of key terms that appear throughout the text. The text is not directly insensitive or offensive, but examples of artwork by BIPOC are limited and presented from colonial perspectives.
Principle 7: Balance
The definitions of terminologies accurate and simplified for readers to grasp the concepts quickly. The arrangement of sections allow for each to be taken separately as necessary. The chapters can be presented in different order or omitted altogether. The book does a good job of being varied and unbiased, especially when describing art made in varying regions by peoples with different ethnic backgrounds. The modularity is the book's necessary natural feature since it cover so much.
Having more contemporary images / historical information can allow for students to make more meaningful connections with the art of today. While it can be difficult to address global art production with an unbiased voice, I found the overall content to be thoughtful and generally balanced. I also appreciated the authors’ openness regarding the strengths and limits of various perspectives and explanations throughout the text. It is perhaps noteworthy to mention that some chapters were more effective in presenting a global perspective than others, although this is addressed in more detail below. Overall, I found the content to be accurate and well-researched.

There was no confusion with the image labelling or creative commons attributions, and I found the single column view easy to read. With this being said, I did enjoy looking at more historical works and works from the 19th century through the lens of these very contemporary themes. I was also newly introduced to a few engaging works such as Sargent’s Gassed (Fig. 9.10) and Daumier’s The Third Class Carriage (Fig. 8.20).
The text contains mostly accurate information, but could use further clarity. For example, if using Indigenous names, use tribal identifiers, such as Piikani for those who identify as Blackfeet. A piece of dance regalia is referred to as a “costume,” which elucidates the author’s limited understanding of the role of garb in ritual. While appropriation, as covered in Chapter 11, is an integral part of the contemporary artworld, it is also presented as acceptable and normalized.

Additionally, space is conveyed in art through variations of depth, otherwise referred to as perspective, and proportion otherwise referred to by size. Positive space is the object or subject itself in a work art, for example, if a pair of scissors is drawn, the positive space would be the pair of scissors. The negative space is the space around the subject, in this case, the pair of scissors and the area in the loops of the scissors would constitute the negative space. There are different types of shapes, namely, circle, square, triangle, rectangle, oval, and others. A fun fact about these shapes is when they turn into forms, for example, a circle becomes a sphere, a triangle becomes a cone, and a square becomes a cube, and so forth.
Outdated links or redirects could cause the text to become obsolete. This is a benefit for adding new contemporary or cultural examples through the text. Art embraces all forms of experimentation and is not reliant on a specific reaction. On the other hand, design requires the designer to possess a deep understanding of their audience to provide the desired outcome or service, such that their audience identifies the design as the “best design” for the intended use. This book should have relevance for a long time because the material it covers is primarily about past art—which for the most part doesn’t change.
The text also does a good job with listing and creating Learning Outcomes for each chapter along with a wide variety of mostly good quality open sourced images. While there are lists of Key Terms included in each chapter, they are minimal at best and there does not seem to be enough cross connection with the terms and their use within the body of the text. There is also some problems with being too simplistic with terms and concepts, one example being the use of icon which is very much dependent on both the historic and cultural context.
Movement is all about leading the eye to the focal point or central subject, or merely around the entirety of the composition. It is achieved by arranging and applying various elements in such a way that creates a sense of dynamism. Rhythm is created through repeated elements and this creates movement.
HTC Dream also get the same sentiment with its superfluous camera with mediocre quality. Other than that, smartphone industry also getting the same cynical approaches. They argue that smartphone should be made with leaves, plastic, or other material that could be easily disposed and recyclable. Thankfully, Google's Project Ara are working on this issue—and in the future, we can expect smartphone to be more environmental friendly.
I feel it would be a good accompaniment to a chronological art history text. It addresses topics that may not be covered in other art texts as fully including a definition of art, the distinction between fine art and craft, art and identity and ethics in art . The text gives examples of varied types of art from diverse cultures. There are good visual examples from historical to contemporary. This book presents information in an accurate way, although it includes a very limited perspective on art by BIPOC.
