You’ll notice links to helpful how-to and tutorial videos within Design Space. These short segments will help you learn new features, brush up on basics, or just level up your creative skillset. The 7.9 update also has updates and improvements to the Background Remover feature when you’re uploading outside files (SVG, DXF, JPG, PNG, GIF, or BMP). If you remove a background and want to restore some of it, you can now see a vague shadow of what will be restored when you use the restore tool.

May 2022 Cricut Design Space Updates (v7.

Hover over the Cricut Design Space icon in the system tray and you can see the current version of your software. Discover more personalized project inspiration with the new Inspire page! It can be found on the left side of the screen while on the Home page. If you notice a Design Space bug that needs to be reported to Cricut, you can send them feedback here. In the new version of Design Space, click on the Text button, and you’ll see a blue box with the word “Text” in it.

Where did the Browser App Go?

Depending on your design, you may want text closer or further apart — now you’ll have more control over the look you’re going for. We have already rolled out most of the new features listed below. Offset and Project Collections will roll out within the next few weeks. You can read our blog that details everything you need to know about the new Monogram Maker feature.

Cricut rolls out their updates in “waves,” meaning that not every user gets the software update at the same time. There’s no way to force and update to get the newest version of Cricut Design Space. The best thing you can try is to exit and restart the Design Space program and see if it automatically updates to the current plugin. This update also adds more learning tools to Cricut Design Space, specifically for Cricut Maker 3 and Cricut Explore 3. If you have one of these machines selected, you’ll see a Learning Plan link in the dropdown in the upper left of Design Space.

Start your text and just get typing rather than in a separate text-entry box. You will also be able to see a preview when curving or rotating your text. The curved text tool is now available on iOS devices as well as desktops. Hey Hey, friends, I’m Cori George and I'm the creative mind behind this colorful business! Offset

This newest release had a great new feature for Cricut Access members—Cricut Monogram Maker! I’ve written about how to use this new tool in my post How to Use the Cricut Monogram Maker in Design Space. If you make the text box narrower than your text, Cricut Design Space will automatically wrap your text (force it to another line). These updates have to do with the way that items are handled on the Canvas within Cricut Design Space.

Also, soon we will be making changes that affect members who use the free Design Space app without a Cricut Access plan. Every calendar month, these members will be allowed to upload up to 20 personal images and/or patterns. Members with a paid Cricut Access plan will have unlimited uploads. All members, with or without a paid plan, will keep all of their existing uploads in Design Space. Enhanced user experience on Mat Preview allows you to remove grid lines on the mat preview to show greater contrast. Simply click away from the image layer to view it on the mat without grid lines.

How to plan a wedding: The Story of a Bride To Be.

There are also minor improvements to the Automatic Background Remover tool, which helps with removing backgrounds on more complex images. The biggest update for this round is the addition of keyboard shortcuts (sometimes called “hotkeys”) in Cricut Design Space. If you have used keyboard shortcuts in other programs, many of these function the same way. There are also some changes to the notifications in Cricut Design Space added in June.

There have been a lot of changes to Cricut Design Space in 2022. These exciting new changes are a game-changer when it comes to making your next project. Then when I go to the Bookmarks tab at the top, I’ll only see the fonts I’ve bookmarked. This update is all small glitch fixes—there are no bigger updates that you should notice. Now an alert will notify users if their computer doesn’t meet the system requirement of having at least 4GB of available RAM. Now when you choose to restore areas of your image during upload, we show you a shadow of the restore area to better assist you with image restoration.

You’ll now get to preview a Cricut Design Space link in a browser vs. having to open the app on your computer or phone. Cricut often makes changes and upgrades to the Cricut Design Space software. Here is what has changed most recently in the desktop software, plus a history of Cricut Design Space updates so you can make the most out of the program.

This update changed My Projects in the top navigation bar to My Stuff. My Stuff has a lot more than My Projects did, including your uploaded and saved images. When you bookmark a project, you’ll get more options for organizing your files within My Stuff, including accessing all of your collections. On a text box, you’ll notice that there are also “handles” on the bounding box on the top, bottom, and right and left sides. This update includes a brand new tool called Cricut Editable Images.

The developer, Najma Kousar, indicated that the app’s privacy practices may include handling of data as described below. Added additional information to the System info screen in the Design Space menu. If for some reason after calibration your cuts are still inaccurate, clear cache (the troubleshooting guide above this) and try calibration again. From the Canvas, you can now preview your design with thicker or thinner pen & marker tip sizes — so you can better imagine what your project will look like. Kerning is a technique used to improve the visual aesthetics of text by adjusting the spacing between two characters.

More information about Phrases can be seen in these release notes. First, if you have a very small object on your Canvas, the bounding box handles will disappear making it easier to move around. You can zoom in to see the bounding box handles if you need to make any changes to size or rotation (or you can still use the Edit toolbar at the top). Also included in this update is another bounding box update! Now you can resize projects using the sides of the bounding box, not just the corners. This allows you to change the height or width independently, instead of adjusting them at the same time.

I recently found one update that I can’t seem to find in Cricut’s release notes. When you create text that’s overlapping (like a script or cursive font), Cricut Design Space no longer requires you to Weld your letters together. You can see here the un-welded word on the left becomes welded once you hit Make It in the upper right.

The Fall of the House of Usher Summary, Characters, Themes, & Facts

fall of house of usher

Described by Frederick as “Gucci Caligula,” Perry is the youngest of the Usher children. Having only recently been thrust into the life of the ultra-rich, Perry’s goal is to make life one big party, and he’s hoping to use his family’s money to achieve just that. “It’s batshit crazy in the best possible way,” Carla Gugino told Netflix during production. “It has quite a lot of very dark humor, but also really touches the soul.” In the series, Gugino portrays a shape-shifter named Verna, whose origins can be traced back to a — let’s just say — very famous Poe character.

“The Haunted Palace”

Soon, Roderick posits his theory that the house itself is unhealthy, just as the narrator supposes at the beginning of the story. Might we then interpret Roderick as a symbol of the conscious mind – struggling to conceal some dark ‘secret’ and make himself presentable to his friend, the narrator – and Madeline as a symbol of the unconscious? Note how Madeline is barely seen for much of the story, and the second time she appears she is literally buried (repressed?) within the vault. ‘The Fall of the House of Usher’ is probably Edgar Allan Poe’s most famous story, and in many ways it is a quintessential Gothic horror story.

Philip Winthrop (Mark Damon) travels to the House of Usher, a desolate mansion surrounded by a murky swamp, to see his fiancée Madeline Usher (Myrna Fahey). Roderick foresees the family evils being propagated into future generations with a marriage to Madeline and vehemently discourages the union. Philip becomes increasingly desperate to take Madeline away; desperate to get away from her brother, she agrees to leave with him. Series Info

fall of house of usher

It’s not perfect – the order in which the Poe family meet their fates is a case of diminishing returns, as its most intriguing members are dispatched too quickly. Some of the CGI, particularly one scene involving bodies falling from the sky, is unintentionally funny. Problematically, Flanagan tends to conflate queerness with depravity and sexual fluidity is punished here with an unnerving flourish. But the show remembers to be actually scary, with truly inspired uses of chimps, mirrors and sprinkler systems. There’s no question that The Fall of the House of Usher ranks among Flanagan’s finest works.

Both poems parallel and thus predict the plot line of “The Fall of the House of Usher.” “Mad Trist,” which is about the forceful entrance of Ethelred into the dwelling of a hermit, mirrors the simultaneous escape of Madeline from her tomb. “Mad Trist” spookily crosses literary borders, as though Roderick’s obsession with these poems ushers their narratives into his own domain and brings them to life. Madeline soon dies, and Roderick decides to bury her temporarily in the tombs below the house. He wants to keep her in the house because he fears that the doctors might dig up her body for scientific examination, since her disease was so strange to them.

As the series draws to a close, Verna—whose name is an anagram of the titular bird in Poe's classic 1845 poem "The Raven"—is shown placing an item on each of the Usher's graves that represents their respective downfalls, closing the loop of her karmic retribution. As Roderick finishes his story, an eyeless and bloodied Madeline suddenly bursts out of the basement and attacks Roderick as the house begins to crumble around them. In a final burst of strength, Madeline strangles Roderick to death as Auggie flees collapsing home—a sequence that mirrors the ending of Poe's "House of Usher."

Every episode includes flashbacks to a young Roderick (Zach Gilford), Madeline (Willa Fitzgerald), and Annabel Lee (Katie Parker), Roderick’s first wife. These fill in how the Ushers made their fortune, but they’re kind of a narrative drag. It’s important that Roderick and Madeline are cruel, selfish creatures—less so how they got that way.

Roderick tells the narrator that he suffers from nerves and fear and that his senses are heightened. Roderick’s sister, Madeline, has taken ill with a mysterious sickness—perhaps catalepsy, the loss of control of one’s limbs—that the doctors cannot reverse. He listens to Roderick play the guitar and make up words for his songs, and he reads him stories, but he cannot lift Roderick’s spirit.

Plot

(Poe had one too.) Roderick has been haunted by all his awful children who have shuffled off this mortal coil, and it’s because it feels like the ghosts are finally coming for him that he is ready to confess. He’s having visions of monstrous ghosts, including the recurring specter of Verna (Carla Gugino), a figure that connects most of these tall tales as a sort of vengeful force of karma, the devil come to take what she’s due from a man who profited off the pain of others. Within a few hours of the narrator’s arrival, Roderick begins to share some of his theories about his family. Much to the narrator’s surprise, Roderick claims that the Usher mansion is sentient and that it exercises some degree of control over its inhabitants. According to Roderick, Madeline suffers from a cataleptic disease that has gradually limited her mobility.

Perhaps the most obvious parallel lies in the initially shallow crack in the manor, representing the impending destruction of the house. Because the last of the Usher line are twins, that the crack divides the house in two signals their eternal separation in death. Roderick has come from a miserable childhood with a puritanical, sickly mother who believes that “pain and suffering are the kiss of Jesus”. The family is made up of Flanagan’s regular ensemble of actors, and to buy them as relatives requires a lot of suspension of disbelief, but for Flanagan fans, there’s great fun to be had seeing how these favourites fit into his new tale of terror.

It is revealed that Roderick's sister, Madeline, is also ill and falls into cataleptic, deathlike trances. Flanagan finishes his Netflix contract on a high, gleefully capturing Poe’s magic, eerie romance and sense of dread. His shows have become the streaming service’s best offerings for spooky season, and it is hard to imagine how that void will be filled.

The overarching narrative of The Fall of the House of Usher loosely follows Poe's 1839 short story of the same name, with Roderick recounting his decades-spanning tale to Auggie inside his decrepit childhood home. In “The Fall of the House of Usher,” the setting, diction, and imagery combine to create an overall atmosphere of gloom. The story opens on a “dull, dark, and soundless day” in a “singularly dreary tract of country.” As the narrator notes, it is autumn, the time of year when life begins to give way to old age and death. A mere glimpse of the Usher mansion inspires in the narrator “an iciness, a sinking, a sickening of the heart.” Upon entering the house, the reader as the narrator navigates through a series of dark passages lined with carvings, tapestries, and armorial trophies.

In 1950, a British film version of The Fall of the House of Usher was produced starring Gwen Watford, Kay Tendeter and Irving Steen. The bedroom door is then blown open to reveal Madeline, bloodied from her arduous escape from the tomb. In a final fit of rage, she attacks her brother, scaring him to death as she herself expires. The narrator then runs from the house, and, as he does, he notices a flash of moonlight behind him. He turns back in time to see the Moon shining through the suddenly widened crack in the house. As he watches, the House of Usher splits in two and the fragments sink away into the lake.

He took on Shirley Jackson in The Haunting of Hill House (which was fabulous), Henry James in The Haunting of Bly Manor (spooky but saccharine) and Christopher Pike in The Midnight Club (meh). Thankfully, Flanagan and Poe’s sensibilities prove a winning pairing, staying on the edge of terror without cascading into jump scares and sentimentality. Guilt permeates every frame of Flanagan’s Poe universe, and buys into not so much the horror as the terror. The secret that is buried and then comes to light (represented by Madeline) is never revealed.

Its main character, William Stendahl, builds a house based on the specifications from Poe's story to murder his enemies. From his arrival, the narrator notes the family's isolationist tendencies, as well as the cryptic and special connection between Madeline and Roderick, the final living members of the Usher family. Throughout the tale and her varying states of consciousness, Madeline completely ignores the narrator's presence. After Roderick Usher claims that Madeline has died, the narrator helps Usher entomb Madeline in an underground vault despite noticing Madeline's flushed, lifelike appearance.

Most of the flashbacks to a young Usher and Dupin are thin, especially compared to the wicked fun on display in the fates of the Usher children. It feels like padding to get episodes to a full hour when Flanagan and company could have leaned even more into the episodic structure that highlights a single Poe per chapter. The first two episodes of The Fall of the House of Usher premiered at Fantastic Fest in September 2023 before the Netflix release the following month, being viewed more than 13 million times in its first two weeks. It was met with positive reviews, with critics praising its production values, directing, and performances (in particular from Gugino, Greenwood and Mark Hamill), although they were divided on its narrative, notably in relation to the source materials.

Mark Hamill

The narrator observes the house as having an almost human-like quality, describing its windows as “eye-like.” Just as Roderick appears to radiate his own melancholy, so too does the house have a depressing air. Furthermore, the house, despite holding together as a totality, shows signs of physical decay, like crumbling stones, dead trees, and mushrooms growing from the masonry. Madeline herself is dying of a wasting disease, showing physical deterioration.

Cast and characters

fall of house of usher

On the one hand, the house itself appears to be actually sentient, just as Roderick claims. Its windows are described as “eye-like,” and its interior is compared to a living body. For one, “the entire family lay in the direct line of descent,” meaning that only one son from each generation survived and reproduced.

What’s more interesting is to watch how the fallout of their decisions fell on Roderick’s many children, all torn apart by some of Poe’s most memorable creations. It turns out that almost every branch of the Usher family tree has been cut by violent horror. ” “No, not before,” he replies in one of the show’s many glimpses of Flanagan’s viciously dark sense of humor.

As the narrator reads of the knight's forcible entry into the dwelling, he and Roderick hear cracking and ripping sounds from somewhere in the house. When the dragon's death cries are described, a real shriek is heard, again within the house. As he relates the shield falling from off the wall, a hollow metallic reverberation can be heard throughout the house.

All of these nightmarish visions are attached to the family drama that Usher offers up for Dupin, giving the season a clever episodic structure in that each chapter intertwines a different Poe source into the overall saga of the Ushers. Inspired by the work of Edgar Allan Poe, House of Usher traces the downfall of the uber-wealthy Usher family and their corrupt drug company, Fortunato Pharmaceuticals. The story centers on Usher family patriarch and Fortunato CEO Roderick (Bruce Greenwood), who, as the show begins, calls up his longtime rival, assistant U.S. attorney C. From the start of the first episode of The Fall of the House of Usher, we know that all of Roderick Usher's children are dead. It's the how and the why of their deaths that plays out over the course of Mike Flanagan's new horror anthology series, now streaming on Netflix. Poe uses the term house to describe both the physical structure and the family.

Roderick Usher’s children are getting what they deserve, not merely because they are the fruit of a very poisoned tree but because they have made horrific decisions to stay in the shelter of wealth and privilege. Siblings Roderick and Madeline Usher have built a pharmaceutical company into an empire of wealth, privilege and power; however, secrets come to light when the heirs to the Usher dynasty sta... When Poe began writing short stories, the short story was not generally regarded as serious literature. Poe’s writing helped elevate the genre from a position of critical neglect to an art form. “The Fall of the House of Usher” stands as one of Poe’s most popular and critically examined stories.

We have a mysterious secret afflicting the house and eating away at its owner, the Gothic ‘castle’ (here, refigured as a mansion), premature burial (about which Poe wrote a whole other story), the mad owner of the house, and numerous other trappings of the Gothic novel. Poe condenses these into a short story and plays around with them, locating new psychological depths within these features. Usher has been reimagined as the head of a massive pharmaceutical company he runs with his twin sister, Madeline (Mary McDonnell).

Discover More Based on a Book

Many critics have interpreted the story as, in part, an autobiographical portrait of Poe himself, although we should be wary, perhaps, of speculating too much about any parallels. Several days later, Roderick tells the narrator that Madeline has died, and they lay her to rest in a vault. In the days that follow, the narrator starts to feel more uneasy in the house, and attributes his nervousness to the gloomy furniture in the room where he sleeps.

We know from Poe’s experience in the magazine industry that he was obsessed with codes and word games, and this story amplifies his obsessive interest in naming. “Usher” refers not only to the mansion and the family, but also to the act of crossing a -threshold that brings the narrator into the perverse world of Roderick and Madeline. Roderick’s letter ushers the narrator into a world he does not know, and the presence of this outsider might be the factor that destroys the house. The narrator is the lone exception to the Ushers’ fear of outsiders, a fear that accentuates the claustrophobic nature of the tale. By undermining this fear of the outside, the narrator unwittingly brings down the whole structure. A similar, though strangely playful crossing of a boundary transpires both in “Mad Trist” and during the climactic burial escape, when Madeline breaks out from death to meet her mad brother in a “tryst,” or meeting, of death.

“There is a fantastical supernatural element to the story, and she is the manifestation of that,” she added. As these first look photos and posters reveal, Verna isn’t one to be played with. “You could say she’s the executor of fate or the executor of karma,” said Gugino. When one steps back and looks at the whole narrative of the season of “The Fall of the House of Usher,” it sags in places.

A television adaptation was produced by ATV for the ITV network in 1966 for the horror anthology series Mystery and Imagination. A second silent film version, also released in 1928, was directed by James Sibley Watson and Melville Webber. "Oftentimes, people will decide on a less expensive or even a used generator over the quality and functions a new device can offer," he says. It can support both liquid propane and natural gas and has a power output of around 22kW. It also comes with a 200-amp automatic transfer switch, which switches on the generator when electricity is cut off. The generator has an anti-corrosive aluminum enclosure that protects its engine during extreme conditions. Clean-burning liquid propane (LP) can be stored indefinitely if it’s stored properly.

With a yes or no based on whether a generator included overload protection, each product gained or lost points totaling 5% of the total ranking. Those living in warmer regions or simply worried about a generator overheating may appreciate this category at 5% of the total ranking. Each generator was evaluated based on whether or not it offered the high temperature shutdown option.

How Much Does Gas Line Installation Cost?

Air-cooled generators are usually less efficient, and they tend to have shorter shelf lives when used in whole-house contexts. Liquid-cooled generators tend to work best, particularly if you live in an area that often reaches temperatures of over 100 degrees, because they are much less likely to overheat. The generator can also be run on a low-speed mode to reduce noise, save fuel and tighten your control.

For paired-storage (PS) systems less than 10 kW, NEM credits are capped in accordance with the NEM PS estimation methodology, as described in the NEM Successor Tariff. Whether you are considering an energy storage system or have one set up, be sure to review SCE's Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) standards and practices to make sure your system operates safely. From the initial consultation, the final startup, we will take care of the entire project. The DuroMax XP9000iH Inverter Generator is a solid pick if you’re interested in “cleaner” power and improved efficiency by ebbing and flowing engine speeds to match your power demands.

Most standby home generators come equipped with several safety features designed to protect them from overheating and failing when you need them most. Though a home generator is a long-term investment, the unit, and its components still must fit your budget. Unfortunately, with smaller size comes larger noise; the Briggs & Stratton 12kW generator is one of the loudest on our top five list. Additionally, neither Briggs & Stratton generator on our list comes with an Automatic Transfer Switch—those must be purchased separately. Generac’s technology is designed to keep power consistent to protect more delicate electronics from dangerous distortion.

This workhorse outputs an awesome 22,000 watts of power—enough to keep not just your home powered but possibly your neighbors’ houses, too. With the lowest MSRP per kilowatt of any comparable home generator we reviewed, this Generac generator is our top choice for those who need a lot of power. If you experience an occasional power outage or have less power needs, the smaller generator like the Generac 7210 with its 8kW power output would be enough. You can also consider getting a smaller dual-fuel generator or propane generator to cut your expenses on fuel.

Using it, you can also schedule maintenance servicing, access information, and also check its current operating status. The best thing about the generator is that it is fitted with a 50-amp transfer switch that ensures you have power immediately you get a black-out in your home. You wouldn’t have to wake up in the middle of a stormy night to go switch it on. Choose what your power needs are from the list below or select whole house if you want everything to run at the same time during a power outage. When choosing the generator output, select a rating that is approximately 20 to 25% higher than the peak load (for example, if the total expected wattage is about 22 kilowatts, choose a 27 kW generator).

Portable generators are convenient but often need to be manually started with a pull cord. Choosing the right whole house generator based on your budget involves careful consideration of your power needs and available options. While these generators offer excellent backup power solutions, your choice should align with your financial constraints. When you’ve determined what power level you need from your whole house generator, you should consider whether you want an air-cooled or liquid-cooled system. An air-cooled generator either passively uses the surrounding air to cool the engine or relies on a fan to maintain temperature. If you have a small home or need fewer watts of power, the Generac PowerPact 7,500 Watt Standby Generator is a great option.

How Energy Storage Systems Work

Standby generators are the most expensive option, but they're also the most reliable. Obviously, small generators will only offer enough backup power for minimal lighting and keeping your electronic devices charged. In contrast, larger, whole-home generators may provide enough backup power to run water heaters, HVAC systems, or large appliances. Whole-home or standby generators can deliver enough power to run an entire home. These units are a permanent part of your home and usually require professional installation. Those looking for a more budget-friendly option will find it with Champion’s Power Equipment 3500W Generator.

The exact price will come down to what features you’re looking for and the cost of installation labor in your area. In order to take advantage of those benefits, it’s crucial you get the right generator for your unique situation and application. Check out our list of the best whole house generators to see which model would be the best for you to keep your home running even without a connection to the grid. The 459cc Champion engine is easy to start with the handy rocker switch, and the LED display lets you keep an eye on voltage, frequency, session run time, and total run time.

Difference Between Home and Whole House Generators

This technology is still in development and will likely become more efficient and streamlined as technology advances. A solar generator for the home will cost between $2,000 and $25,000, with most costing at least $10,000. If the homeowner is away and there’s a power outage, they can make sure that the generator has kicked on. A smart load manager can help create different zones in the home and switch the power between them.

Overload protection is a function of the generator system’s load management device. The availability and inclusion of the device in the purchase price was rewarded in our review. The Briggs & Stratton 10kW generator is the loudest per kilowatt on our list, likely due to its smaller size.

If you need to maintain power in your home for medical devices, a mobile monitoring generator will help prepare you. You should budget around $4,700 to buy this generator, not including installation. You'll have to check the fuel level and test it regularly to ensure it's working.

The amount of stored power will depend on your home’s energy usage as well as the size of your energy system. This stored energy will then keep your home powered on during an outage or a PSPS. You may also be able to take advantage of Time-Of-Use rates by charging your battery when rates are lower during the day or on weekends. Beyond those mentioned above, fuel-free alternatives like solar generators are also available. While these generators can help in emergency situations, they’re limited in the wattage they supply and are typically only useful for powering small appliances and devices. Compact, portable power stations are good backup power options for those in smaller spaces (think condos or apartments) and are often suitable for powering smaller home appliances in a pinch.

We hope that our guide was a helpful hand in your search for the best whole house generator. If you know other great generators that we overlooked, please share in the comments. When you go to refill the generator or check the LCD screen for details, make sure your hands are completely dry, especially if it is on and running.

If quietness is important to you, that is a crucial factor to remember. Other customers cite frustration with the short warranty period (one year). Like the Briggs & Stratton model, this generator is Wi-Fi-enabled and can be monitored from your phone. That test helps provide some peace of mind that your generator will turn on in an emergency.

You can use the Generac 7210 with all of your sensitive electronics as it has less than 5% harmonic distortion. It does a 5 to 12-minutes self-test weekly and during the process, it consumes less fuel and runs at a lower RPM than it normally does. Thank you for requesting a free, no-obligation quote on a standby generator system. A higher-rated generator will operate comfortably at approximately 80% of its full capacity and will provide a margin of flexibility if the load increases in the future. They will, for instance, keep your refrigerator, air conditioner, and well pump running. The wattage of the unit should top the list of considerations when buying a generator. Ideally, you should analyze your home’s square footage, overall energy consumption, and the number of appliances (or electrical loads) you want to keep powered during an outage. Briggs & Stratton home generators cost $2,400 to $15,300 depending on size, with models ranging from 10 to 48 kW.

Generac Guardian 3-Phase 20kW Automatic Standby Generator Wi-Fi Enabled runs about $5,599 on average. The Generac PowerPact 7,500 Watt Standby Generator runs about $2,049 on average. The Windsor Residence: Capturing Breathtaking Vistas in Los Angeles

country interior design

We can't imagine a sweeter way to dress up unsightly larger appliances, like dishwashers. Add to the scheme with fabrics in equally botanical prints, such as this Forever Spring collection from ILIV. A rattan chair or bench is a good place to start if space permits but if not, rattan and reed baskets or a jute rug will all create a rustic look that has all the more charm because of their non-uniform finishes.

Warm and Homey Country Living Room Ideas

Bring a happy, relaxed element to your country living room ideas by bringing in a ‘cabin escape’ element to your scheme. ‘A sage blanket or throw can brighten up a chair in your living space but still leaves you with a feeling of calmness, and we all need that now,’ Wischnia says. ‘Some of my favorite elements involve wood on the ceiling,’ agrees Ran-D, interior designer and co-founder of RelaxingDecor. So load up on soft blankets, homey art, fresh flowers, and other details that will make your space feel warmer and more welcoming.

Choose decorative furniture

‘It's important to pay attention to the traditional features of a property rather than attempting to hide or change them. Enhance them by decorating a fireplace, say, or painting joinery in a high-gloss lacquer finish. Step back in time with a classical country feel like this room at Ballyfin, Ireland. Country style is known for its warm atmosphere and lived-in feel, and durable furniture makes that casual attitude a lot easier to achieve. You could also consider trying your hand at DIY crafting to create custom accessories to stay within budget. And scour local antique markets and secondhand stores for unique planters to house spring flowers, like tulips, daffodils, and hyacinths.

Put a classic dresser in your kitchen – and make it pop!

Compared to every other room in a home, the kitchen is arguably the most popular spot to gather with friends and family. And these days rustic cooking spaces brimming with country charm are irresistible. Luckily, the country kitchen concept is very malleable—it can feel clean and minimal, retro and colorful, or elegantly traditional. By incorporating warm woods, antique-inspired lighting, and modern, vintage-style appliances, designer Cathy Chapman created a kitchen with a nostalgic feel reminiscent of Grandma's. The beauty of natural materials is a focus of rustic style and incorporating them into your country living room ideas will bring a real sense of warmth and authenticity.

Add a Reclaimed Wood Feature Wall

You can DIY or buy distressed painted furniture to add that antique factor to your bedroom. Design a rustic bathroom out in the country with a theme of natural wood and stone. This ladder made of unfinished wood is a great decorative piece for a farmhouse bathroom. This modern farmhouse living room features a beautiful brass framed mirror between repurposed shutters and white dinnerware.

‘Think back to the country farmhouses of the past; a lot of these spaces will have had brick or stone walls,’ explains Ryan Jones from Land of Rugs. Take a tour through our favorite country-style homes to get ideas to transform your home into a cozy abode, and use our helpful design tips to give your home a country look that's anything but expected. So instead of recreating the country-style homes you’ve seen before, focus on crafting a space that you want to live in. Top your shelves with family-friendly DIY projects, and line your walls with mementos. Though bookshelves aren’t unique to country-style dĂ©cor, they can make a room feel smaller, snugger, and more intimate—and they’ll give you plenty of room to display your favorite heirlooms. “We find that clients gravitate toward certain colors, patterns, and textures when they want to make a space feel homey,” she says.

Painting your island a standout shade will help to create a focal point in a larger room, as this design from Drew Forsyth shows. Myrtles Plantation Wikipedia

myrtle plantation house

This happened several times, to the crew’s dismay, although they did manage to get the shots they needed. They added that the cast was happy to move on to another set once the filming at the Myrtles was completed. I am sure that after reading this story, even the most non-discerning readers have discovered a number of errors and problems with the tale.

The Secret History of a Louisiana Plantation Home

Built in 1929, it occupies one of the most idyllic oceanfront spots in all of Southern California. Equally compelling is the story of the close-knit family who once lived here and whose aura continues to permeate the interior, where most of their original furnishings remain. The little boy and girl could be the Woodruff kids, who, though unpoisoned, passed away in close succession during one of the numerous yellow fever epidemics that devastated the Myrtles Plantation. And if we are to accept the legends, the home is actually inhabited by ghosts at various points throughout its past. According to numerous sources, children have been spotted playing on the large verandah of the house, in the halls, and in the rooms. The ghost of a woman wearing a green hat or turban could actually inhabit the residence.

The Legend Of Chloe, Ghost Of The Myrtles

Tragically, his life was cut short a few years later by a murderer. To this day, the room where the children were poisoned has never again been used for dining. Chloe supposedly baked a cake for one of the two daughters containing extract of boiled and reduced oleander leaves, which are extremely poisonous.

Myrtles Plantation

myrtle plantation house

Marshal sold the Myrtles Plantation to the New York Warehouse & Security Corporation. Mary Cobb employed William Drew Winter, the husband of her daughter Sarah Mulford, on December 5, 1865, as her agent and attorney to assist her in overseeing the plantation properties. She agreed to provide Sarah and William with the Myrtles Plantation as payment as part of the arrangement. The Myrtles Plantation and the Stirling family suffered due to the war itself.

It was enthusiastically received by ghost hunters who were unaware that the information they were receiving was seriously distorted. All of that changed, though, when James and Frances Kermeen Myers decided to buy the Myrtles Plantation while passing through on a riverboat. The mansion had enough ghost stories and period antiques to draw guests from all over the nation. After numerous further ownership changes, The Myrtles Plantation was once more restored in the 1970s while being owned by Arlin Dease and Mr. and Mrs. Robert F. Ward. The issue with this is that, as far as we know, Chloe never actually existed.

On the outside of the house, Stirling added a 107-foot-long front gallery that was supported by cast-iron posts and railings. The original roof was extended to encompass the new addition, copying the existing dormers to maintain a smooth line. The addition had higher ceilings than the original house, so the second story floor was raised one foot. The completed project nearby doubled the size of David Bradford's house and in keeping with the renovations, the name of the plantation was officially changed to “the Myrtles." After Elizabeth died, Woodrooff turned his attentions away from farming to the practice of law. He and Octavia moved away from Laurel Grove and he left the plantation under the management of a caretaker.

Shanna Riley/FlickrLegends say that Louisiana’s Myrtles Plantation has long been haunted, from its Indian burial ground to the 1871 murder of William Winter to the infamous ghost known as Chloe. Our journey from New Jersey to Myrtle Beach was well planned over a significant period of time. We are so glad to have worked with with Tom, Paula and their team.

One such place is the Myrtles Plantation in St. Francisville, Louisiana. Each overnight stay with us includes a complimentary day time tour of our historical home on the property and a complimentary breakfast item from our coffee shop on the grounds, Elta. Yellow fever caused several deaths in the home; the dead may have been left behind after passing away.

Historic Preservation

The remaining four bedrooms, that are separated by a common sitting room, are accessed by a staircase that ascends from the rear loggia. The floor of these bedrooms were raised one foot when the house was renovated, as the addition had higher ceilings than the original house.

Webber would be tried for killing Winter, but the case’s conclusion was never made public. Winter’s murderer is still unidentified and unpunished as of this writing. Moving the existing house’s walls made a formal dining room, a game room, and four spacious rooms that served as identical ladies’ and gentlemen’s parlors. Skilled craftsmen were also imported due to year-long visits to Europe to buy excellent furniture. Many forms featured elaborate plaster cornices that were fashioned from a combination of clay, Spanish moss, and cattle hair. The Stirling family required a home appropriate for their social level because they were respected well in the neighborhood.

The academy was apparently short-lived for in 1814, he joined Colonel Hide's cavalry regiment from the Feliciana Parish to fight alongside Andrew Jackson at the Battle of New Orleans. When the War of 1812 had ended, Woodrooff returned to St. Francisville with the intention of studying law. And though Woodruff’s wife and children did die, they weren’t poisoned. According to this story, Winter’s ghost relives his last moments by loudly staggering through the house’s entrance and running up the stairs to the 17th step where he allegedly met his end. Many suggested that this might be the spirit of Chloe, which by this point had become a full-blown local legend.

Up until this point, it was largely just a story that was passed on by word of mouth and it received little attention outside of the area. All of that changed when James and Frances Kermeen Myers passed through on a riverboat and decided to purchase the Myrtles. The house came furnished with period antiques and enough ghost stories to attract people from all over the country. Of nine children, only four of them lived to be old enough to marry. Daughter Sarah Mulford's husband was murdered on the front porch of the house after the Civil War.

The cooperative, friendly and creative Suriano Team made our plan become a reality. We highly appreciate their craftsmanship, professionalism, and personal attention. We hired Suriano Homes after interviewing several other custom builders.

A portion of the film was shot at the Myrtles and it was an experience that the cast and crew would not soon forget. One day, the crew moved the furniture in the game room and the dining room for filming and then left. When they returned, they reported that the furniture had all been moved back to its original position.

Over the years, a number of films and documentaries have also been shot on the ground and many of them have been paranormal in nature. In the 1950s, the Myrtles was owned by wealthy widow Marjorie Munson, who heard some of the local stories that had gotten started about odd things happening at the house. Wondering if perhaps the old mansion might be haunted, she asked around and that's when the legend of "Chloe" got its start. According to the granddaughter of Harrison and Fannie Williams, Lucile Lawrason, her aunts used to talk about the ghost of an old woman who haunted the Myrtles and who wore a green bonnet. She was never given a name and in fact, the ghost with the green bonnet from the story was described as an older woman, never as a young slave who might have been involved in an affair with the owner of the house.

The likelihood that anything strange occurred at the Myrtles Plantation. At the same time, Marjorie Munson was a resident there, prompting her to look for explanations and meet the ghost with the green headdress for the first time, which is also relatively high. There was only one murder in the house as opposed to the expected ten, and William Winter most certainly did not stumble up the stairs to die on the 17th step as the tales of his phantom footsteps purport. William Drew Winter’s murder is the only one at the Myrtles Plantation that has been proven to have happened, and it is entirely unrelated to the stories that have been spread. As previously said, a rider tricked Winter into leaving the house before shooting him dead on the side porch.

The Secret History of a Louisiana Plantation Home Curbed

Some contend that the events were staged so the family would fall ill and Chloe could heal them, winning the Judge’s favor. She would be protected from ever being taken back to the fields in this manner. The second-story floor was raised by one foot since the addition’s ceilings were higher than the original home’s. David Bradford’s home was expanded by half after the neighboring project was finished, and the plantation’s name was changed to the “Myrtles” to reflect the changes. After studying chemistry and physics for the rest of his life, he passed away on November 25, 1851. Judge David Bradford helped him start his studies, and he soon received his degree.

The legend of Chloe

Her plan backfired, however, when the amount of poison caused the children to die. Fearing that they would be accused of murder by association, Chloe’s fellow slaves dragged her from bed that night, hanged her, then threw her body in the river. Some say that Chloe has appeared in their photos from the plantation and others hear the young girls laughing and playing at the Myrtles today.

how historical research revealed the true story behind "one of the most haunted houses in america."

Both the home and the cottages on the property have rooms for rent. The first-floor grand piano also performs independently, frequently repeating the same chord. The music pauses when someone enters the room to check on the sound and only resumes when they depart. If not, she might be one of the Stirling children who died before adulthood. Yet, skeptics disagree, as do the tour guides, which is not surprising. While there is undoubtedly room for discussion on the matter, I believe the “strange” visuals fall more under the umbrella of imagination than they do of paranormal events.

Also, he gave in to the allure of Sarah Mathilda, the attractive daughter of the Bradfords. The crape myrtles are said to have given the house its name, where their romance purportedly took off. Woodrooff returned to St. Francisville after the War of 1812 to attend law school. In addition to Greek and Roman, he intended to teach English, grammar, astronomy, geography, elocution, composition, and penmanship. In 1814, he joined Colonel Hide’s cavalry brigade from the Feliciana parish to fight alongside Andrew Jackson at the Battle of New Orleans, indicating that the academy was likely short-lived.

They are often exposed, first-hand, to happenings that would have weaker folks running from the place in terror. One employee was hired to greet guests at the front gate each day. One day while he was at work, a woman in a white, old-fashioned dress walked through the gate without speaking to him. She strolled up to the house and vanished through the front door without ever opening it. Clark Woodrooff was born in Litchfield County, Connecticut, in August 1791.

One of them, Clark Woodrooff, married Sarah Mathilda, his teacher’s daughter, in addition to receiving a law degree. He believed he could sell the barrels and recoup any money he had lost in the sale because New Orleans was experiencing a flour scarcity at the time. However, he got the flour supply the day before he passed away in 1817. He made numerous attempts over many years to pay the obligation, but something has yet to materialize.

He devoted the remainder of his life to the study of chemistry and physics and died on November 25, 1851. By this time, Woodrooff was living on Rampart Street in New Orleans and had changed the spelling of his last name to "Woodruff." He had also been elected as the president of public works for the city. During this period, Octavia was sent to a finishing school in New Haven, Connecticut, but she returned home to live with her father in 1836. Two years later, she married Colonel Lorenzo Augustus Besancon and moved to his plantation, Oaklawn, five miles north of New Orleans. Still seeking to make his fortune, Woodrooff placed an advertisement in the St. Francisville newspaper, the Time Piece, in the summer of 1811.

Myrtles Plantation

Supposedly, the spot was the same size as a human body and this was said to have been where one of the Union soldiers fell. The strange phenomenon was said to have lasted for a month and has not occurred since. The only problem with this story is that no soldiers were ever killed in the house. There are no records or evidence to say that there were and in fact, surviving family members denied the story was true.

It would take until the 1970s when Myrtles Plantation was purchased by the Meyers family, that its reputation as a haunted house would come about. The family opened the plantation as a bed and breakfast and it didn’t take long for strange things to take place. Sometime after, the plantation passed to William Winter, a man who married one of the daughters of Sterling.

Whatever the motive, Chloe slipped a little poison into a birthday cake intended for Woodruff’s oldest daughter. Woodruff was known for being promiscuous but also had a good reputation for being honest with people and the law. He began a close relationship with one of his slaves while his wife was carrying their third child.

He was compelled to leave the house in October 1794, leaving his family behind. Bradford took part in the notorious Whiskey Rebellion, and according to lore, President George Washington put a bounty on the man’s head because of it. His first marriage fell through just days before the ceremony (nothing is known about this), but he later found Elizabeth Porter, whom he married in 1785, and they began a family. The Myrtles Plantation is haunted, but not for the reasons I have all been told, according to hundreds of people who have experienced the paranormal here. Employees at the house often get the worst of the events that happen here.

He then managed to climb just high enough to die in his beloved's arms on the seventeenth step. It has since been claimed that ghostly footsteps have been heard coming into the house, walking to the stairs and then climbing to the seventeenth step where they, of course, come to an end. Since her death, the ghost of Chloe has been reported at the Myrtles and was even accidentally photographed by a past owner. The plantation still sells picture postcards today with the cloudy image of what is purported to be Chloe standing between two of the buildings. The former slave is thought to be the most frequently encountered ghost at the Myrtles. She has often been seen in her green turban, wandering the place at night.

Marshal to the New York Warehouse & Security Company on April 15, 1868. Two years later, however, on April 23, the property was sold back to Mrs. Sarah M. Winter as the heir of her late father, Ruffin G. Stirling. It is unknown just what occurred to cause this reversal of fortune but it seemed as though things were improving for the family once again. The Stirlings were a wealthy family who owned several plantations on both sides of the Mississippi River. On January 1, Ruffin Grey Stirling and his wife, Mary Catherine Cobb, took over the house, land, buildings and all of the slaves that had been bought from Elizabeth Bradford by her son-in-law.
